1. What is the historical background of coffee in Ethiopia?
Ethiopia, as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, boasts a unique and esteemed coffee culture, earning its reputation as a prominent coffee-producing nation. Ethiopians have nurtured coffee trees for both personal use and commercial distribution since the discovery of these trees growing wild in the country's lush forests. Coffee, deeply ingrained in Ethiopian culture, stands as an integral aspect of daily life. Ethiopian coffee distinguishes itself with a remarkable 99% greater genetic diversity than coffee from other regions, making it the most genetically diverse coffee worldwide. This extraordinary genetic diversity piques the keen interest of coffee connoisseurs.
Ethiopia's love for coffee is evident, with nearly half of the country's annual production of 6.5 million bags being consumed domestically, while the remainder finds its way to international markets. Coffee is typically enjoyed in ceremonial settings, symbolizing hospitality and societal bonds.
The majority of Ethiopian coffee farmers are small-scale, subsistence farmers, each typically owning less than a hectare of land. Although larger estates and cooperative societies exist, the average coffee producer's output remains modest for commercial purposes. Coffee is often cultivated in gardens or forested areas rather than vast expanses of farmland.
2. What is the typical coffee processing method employed in Ethiopia?
In Ethiopia, coffee undergoes diverse preparation methods for the market. Sizeable privately owned farms employ hired workers to manage the entire coffee processing cycle, from harvesting to milling, all conducted on their premises. On the other hand, small-scale farmers engaged in "garden coffee" cultivation deliver their coffee cherries to the nearest washing station, where they are sold, blended with other farmers' produce, and processed according to the station's specific procedures. In contrast, members of coffee cooperatives transport their cherries to a cooperative-run washing station, where meticulous weighing and documentation on the cooperative's register provide traceability back to the individual producer.
3. From where do you source your beans?
